China dug a railway tunnel through layers of poisonous gases in the ground


Chinese workers dug a high-danger tunnel through a rock with layers of poisonous gases, Xinhua News Agency reported on July 9. The Hongduoshan Tunnel in Yunnan Province in southwestern China is part of a railway project that connects the cities of Dali and Linzang, the construction of which began in May 2016. About 73% of the 10.6 km tunnel passes through hazardous areas where eight types of hazardous gases lie, including hydrogen sulfide, carbon dioxide and others, China Railway No.10 Engineering Group Co., said. Ltd., which is implementing the project. The company noted that for the first time China dug a tunnel through layers of dangerous gases of such a large number of categories and such a high concentration. According to the deputy chief engineer of the project, the workers wore face masks during drilling, and the air temperature reached 40 degrees Celsius. The 202 km long Dali Linzang railway is designed for the movement of trains at a speed of 160 km/h.
