Poland to introduce new identity cards


Poland has introduced a new form of identity document. It will be an ID card, which will contain, among other things, fingerprints and the electronic signature of the owner. This was reported on September 24 by Dziennik. Polish Deputy Minister of the Interior Pavel Bossernaker said that these changes are prescribed by EU law. According to EU rules, citizens of member countries who are issued with an identity card are required to provide fingerprints. This data, along with the signature, will be entered into the chip on the document. This information should be read in all EU Member States. Bossernaker noted that due to the changes, it will no longer be possible to submit applications for the document remotely, as it was before. Citizens who are temporarily unable to get fingerprints will be issued ID cards with a validity period of only 12 months. With fingerprints, the document will be valid for 5 years. The law fixing the new form of identity documents will enter into force on August 2, 2021. From this date, the gradual replacement of old documents with new ones will begin.
