Shanghai Customs First Stopped China from Entering Desert Locust
Shanghai Customs reported the identification and seizure of locusts in a wooden parcel from western Asia for the first time in all time, according to Xinuha news agency on April 24. The desert locust is considered one of the most devastating of dozens of locust species in the world. It can move 150 km a day and a swarm of one square kilometre locusts can eat a day's volume of food, which is eaten by 35,000 people. Since 2019, locust infestations have had serious environmental, economic and social consequences in several East African countries, including Ethiopia, Sudan and Kenya. At the moment, there is no threat of locust invasion in Shanghai.
